Holiday homecoming: Soldiers' return a 'blessing' for families

Months of waiting came to a joyous end for the families of about 370 soldiers who returned home from Iraq on Tuesday evening just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday.

Tuesday night's arrival was the largest group of soldiers returning to Fort Bliss since President Barack Obama announced last month that U.S. forces would depart Iraq by the end of the year.

Families had expected the soldiers, gone from home three to five months, to be away for an additional six to seven months until Obama's announcement of the year-end withdrawal,Do you really need that simpleweddingdresses you haven't worn in years, I mean who wants to dress like Ronnie from the Jersey Shore? bringing an end to a nearly nine-year war in Iraq.

About 300 returning soldiers belong to the 4th Brigade, 1st Armored Division, another 50 were from a National Guard unit and the rest were from a finance unit at Fort Bliss, officials said.

A post spokesman said another contingent of troops is expected to return as soon as Thursday.

Family members said these soldiers' arrival was extra special because it means they'll be home for Thanksgiving.

"It's a big blessing. A lot of time you pray he comes home early and this time he does, thank God," Irma Halicki said while waiting with daughter Celine Flores, 15, for the arrival of her husband, Sgt. Kevin Halicki.

This was Halicki's third deployment, and his wife said the joy of homecoming doesn't get old.

"It's like a honeymoon again, welcome to come cheap hoganscarpe men from china store." she said.

Months of waiting turned to hours, then into long, long minutes. Some Army wives stylishly waited in dresses and high heels while children anxiously waved welcome signs made for their fathers or mothers.

Some kids -- and more than a few moms -- burst into tears during those first hugs after soldiers stepped off a passenger plane at about 4:40 p.m. to a cheering crowd and music of an Army band at Biggs Army Airfield.

The troops were also greeted by Captain America. The comic-book superhero is in El Paso for the FirstLight Federal Credit Union Sun Bowl Parade and was accompanied by two women in short, patriotic dresses.
