Opposition parties have achieved consensus on the need to accelerate economic growth and tackle what they say is the mismanagement and corruption that has come to characterise the rule of the African National Congress (ANC).
The broad agreement — thrashed out at an economic indaba on Monday — adds impetus to the multiparty initiative to establish a common front ahead of the 2014 general election.
The Forum of Leaders of Parliamentary Opposition Parties has in the past taken up the issue of fair reportage by the public broadcaster ahead of the 2009 elections and also presented a united front in their opposition to the Protection of State Information Bill.
Parties that participated at the discussions included the Democratic Alliance (DA), Congress of the People (COPE), Inkatha Freedom Party, United Democratic Movement (UDM), African Christian Democratic Party and the Pan Africanist Congress.
They agreed that the economy was underperforming and blamed systemic corruption across the government for this.

COPE leader Mosiuoa Lekota said yesterday that the purpose of the indaba was to discuss the faltering economy and the possible solutions to set it on a path to inclusive and sustainable growth.
"Joblessness and sluggish economic growth, the energy crisis, the high levels of unemployment and social inequality, poverty, corruption, an underperforming education system, ageing infrastructure and the emerging service-delivery crisis all posed a serious threat to our country’s social and economic future," Mr Lekota said.
