Column: Accessorize me
Although this is technically a fashion column, I’m taking a bit of a break today to talk about something else: accessories.
I know what you’re thinking: “Aren’t accessories the same thing as fashion?”

But it’s about the entire look — the big picture — as well. What’s a fabulous outfit without the perfect bag or shoe? I’d argue that accessories truly make the outfit.
They’re the elements that leave a lasting impression and build your personal style.

Going Places: Andrew Johnson National Historic Site brings history to life
One of the advantages of living in East Tennessee is the ease of a short drive to fun and historical places. A few weeks ago, I took my family to the Andrew Johnson National Historic Site in Greeneville, Tenn. We started our visit at the Early Andrew Johnson Home, across the street from the Andrew Johnson Visitor Center. We then proceeded across the street to the visitor center. There is a small theater area in the visitor center, and we asked to view the short film on Johnson's life. It was interesting and short enough to hold the attention span of both of my daughters. As we left the theater, the desk attendant asked if we wanted to vote on the impeachment of Andrew Johnson. My girls thought this was fun and it gave us an expanded opportunity to talk about the impeachment process. For the record, the entire family voted "No. Not Guilty."

This was my entire family's favorite part of the visit. Luther was very informative and animated with his descriptions of the house and Johnson's life. We were fascinated with the transformation of the house during the Civil War and how history was preserved behind the wallpaper. My daughters enjoyed the story behind Mrs. Johnson's special box and loved looking at the original toys in one of the bedrooms.
Our last stop was the National Cemetery. The Johnson family burial plot sits on top of a hill with gorgeous views, and during Johnson's lifetime it was one of his favorite places to think and relax. Travel / Southeast Asia: Waking from nightmares to a brighter tomorrow
On a map, somewhere between hell and heaven, you'll find Southeast Asia.
We had glimpses of both extremes on a recent two-week trip to Cambodia and Vietnam. More heaven than hell, luckily. Hosted by the five-star Sofitel Angkor Phokeethra Resort, plans have just been announced for the second annual festival next January. It's not too early to start making plans to attend

GETTING THERE

The bar bustles at night. The next morning over breakfast you watch barges and fishing boats in the gray, gauzy early light. The riverside boulevard is coming to life with joggers, strollers and the occasional party of golden-robed monks. A trickle of motorbikes on the boulevard will soon grow into a never-ending swarm.
"Tuk-tuks" - open-air rickshaws pulled by motorbikes - will be our main form of transportation. You can hire one, hopefully with a friendly, helpful driver, for single trips or half days for under $10.
Cambodia's center of commerce and government, Phnom Penh is home to an architecturally ornate Royal Palace full of Buddhist statues and art; and the National Museum tracing the artistic evolution of Buddhist and Hindu deities over centuries.
But its unavoidable tourist experience entails visits to the Killing Fields outside of the city and the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum in the city center. The museum had been a high school before the 1970s, when it was converted into cells of incarceration and torture under brutal dictator Pol Pot and his sadistic army, the Khmer Rouge.

Two Decades of Battling Through Awards Season Mayhem
War correspondents toil in the trenches, fashion reporters in trench coats -- preferably Lanvin or Burberry. But that's not where the comparison ends. People assume reporting on red-carpet fashion is glitzy at best, frivolous at least -- but these people remain blissfully unaware that awards-show fashion is a battlefield. Outfits get crushed. Egos get bruised.
