'Real Housewives of New Jersey' Recap: Guns, Pizza, & TMI in the Catskills

Tonight's episode of The Real Housewives of New Jersey was a delectable mix of drama and light-heartedness, heavy on the light-heartedness. But like any good Bravo show, it started with the dramz.

The gang (Teresa, Joe, Jacqueline, her husband Chris, Caroline, Albie, and Chris) all went to the Catskills for the weekend, and boy did things get ... wasted.

On their first night there, everybody was sitting around, drinking wine and yucking it up as one should on a vacay, when all of a sudden the conversation turns to ... fellatio. Joe, aristocrat that he is, was basically complaining to Jacqueline and Chris that Teresa isn't good at, well, you know.

Um, what?! First of all, I don't need to hear that. Second of all, way to disrespect your wife. Gross! Didn't look like Teresa's cared about her business being out there, though, as she brought a vibrating ring that Joe apparently puts around his wenis when they have sex to her confessional. We get it, you guys are still hot and heavy for one another. That's great. Now can you stop overcompensating and just keep the bedroom antics ... in the bedroom? Thanks.

And of course no weekend in the country would be complete without a little gun shooting. Interesting factoid: The only thing scarier than Teresa Giudice with a gun is her husband, Joe. Not because he doesn't have excellent aim (he does), because he is trigger happy as a mofo. So, let's see, in addition to telling the world he's unsatisfied with his wife's "performance," he likes to shoot everything in site. Nope, no insecurity going on there.

All in all, it was a fun episode to watch, one that even caught my husband's gaze for full minutes at a time. In a series that's always so full of drama and mean-ness, it was nice to see the ladies of New Jersey simply let loose. To my surprise, it showed me that good, clean fun can almost be as fun to watch as nasty cat fights. Almost.

Cash-starved performers hit Vegas streets for tips

The Las Vegas Strip is teeming with Spidermen, Elmos and Elvis Presleys of all waistlines.

Nevada's woeful economy has inspired dozens of jobless and under-employed men and women to dress up like celebrities,SpeakerBuilding is a resource for DIY gladiatorsandals design and construction. movie characters and cartoon heroes in pursuit of a buck. The gratuity-driven performances have created tension between Las Vegas' mighty gambling industry and free-speech advocates who defend the constitutional rights of adults in spandex pants, rainbow wigs and foam muscles.

Casino titans, and government officials who understand where their tax revenue comes from, have eyed the street performers with alarm and, at times, called in police intervention. The Venetian on the Las Vegas Strip allegedly detained a man dressed like Zorro last year after he posed for a tourist's camera on a public sidewalk bordering the hotel-casino. More recently, the city council relaxed its restrictions on street performers because of legal threats.

"Sometimes the mentality is what's good for the casinos is what's good for Las Vegas, and there is a tendency to forget we are in the United States," said Allen Lichtenstein, general counsel for the American Civil Liberties Union in Nevada. "The Constitution protects expressive activity."

Lichtenstein is representing Zorro, legally known as Jason Perez-Morciglio, in a lawsuit against the Venetian. The lawsuit contends Perez-Morciglio was walking in his Zorro garb across Las Vegas Boulevard last year when a passer-by asked for a picture with him and to hold his sword.

Venetian security guards allegedly responded by detaining the Zorro lookalike and having him arrested for trespassing. The Venetian's legal team claims the Zorro was trying to sell knives without a vendor license.

Sidewalk performers are not unique to Las Vegas. Creative and enterprising panhandlers are as common as hot-dog stands in urban centers across the nation.

What makes the ubiquitous players along the Las Vegas Strip noteworthy is how swiftly their numbers have grown. In a city where celebrity impersonators have long enjoyed headliner status, sidewalk showmen were mostly unheard of before Nevada's epic economic fall. The Silver State has led the nation in unemployment for months and, for some, street performance is a final attempt to fend off financial disaster.

"It helps pay the bills, and it lets them go home with a memory they love," said Luis Reyes, an underemployed electrician who poses with tourists in downtown Las Vegas as KISS frontman Gene Simmons.

Reyes, 48, began his sidewalk tribute to Simmons in November after, to his surprise and frustration, his move from San Francisco to Las Vegas put him no closer to full-time employment. His homemade costume includes a studded codpiece, high-heel boots designed to look like angry dragons and a pair of leather black wings. He hopes to parlay his street hustle into a paid gig as a celebrity impersonator.

Police spokesman Bill Cassell said the performers began mushrooming on Las Vegas streets last year. They gained national attention last month after a man dressed as Batman became involved in a street tussle with a tourist near the Monte Carlo casino on the Las Vegas Strip. No one pressed charges, Cassell said, but the video of the fight circulated on social networking sites.

Pavement performers appear encouraged by a series of court rulings nationwide affirming their right to dress like SpongeBob SquarePants in public.

Most recently, a federal district court in 2009 determined that Seattle's restrictions on street performers were unconstitutional. The case revolved around a balloon artist who opposed the city's efforts to require all buskers to obtain permits.

A man who gave only his stage name as G.B. Entertainer is a 55-year-old Rick James impersonator who moved to Las Vegas 11 years ago with dreams of starring in a celebrity impersonation show. Impersonation jobs are increasingly limited. "American Superstars," one of the longest-running shows in Las Vegas, closed at the Stratosphere casino in March.

Whether she's upside down hanging from a pole or writhing suggestively on the stage, this 25-year-old mother of two makes you think you're at a strip club.

“Ruby Tru,” a slim woman with long auburn hair wearing a thong and a matching full-fitting bra, is part of Bare Essentials, a troupe that performs twice weekly at the Gaslight Saloon, a bar on the gritty northern outskirts of Regina's downtown.

Called a burlesque show that features no stripping, but lots of pole dancing, suggestive poses and elaborate stretching exercises, it's meant to meet a demand by those who prefer adult entertainment with their adult beverage.

“What guy doesn't like to drink booze and look at girls?” said Kevin Pattison, who started Bare Essentials after getting laid off as an iron worker in September.

He decided a show that pushed the limits of liquor laws, but didn't break them, would sell in Saskatchewan.

“It doesn't really matter if she's taking off her clothes. As long as she's sexy and doing a good job up there.”

A decade ago Saskatchewan's last alcohol-serving strip club closed after the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal against the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority rule that prohibits any “striptease performance” or “wet clothing contest.”

The ruling left Saskatchewan as the only place in Canada where stripping is banned where booze is sold, making erotic dancing an endangered species in the province with a lone dry strip club in Regina's industrial district the last remnant.

But the ban in bars essentially doesn't make it economical to run a strip club, he said, which can't operate successfully without the profits from liquor.

“They don't directly prohibit exotic dancing — they make it uneconomical,” he said.

The laws have drawn criticism from a number of bar owners and sparked outrage from online protest groups, who preach civil liberties and argue the ban is antiquated and unevenly enforced. The government defends the laws as necessary for the responsible consumption of alcohol.

Meanwhile, a thriving counter-culture of “everything but” stripping, led by Pattison's group and a flurry of Alberta-based travelling shows, has cropped up at bars across the province where owners bring in shows offering lap dances.

Marty Derbowka, owner of the Yorkton City Limits Inn, brought in a group of Alberta dancers two years ago, persuaded the show was within the rules.

The business model at Frocking Gorgeous is different: Sophie buys her stock; her family all help her find things and she sometimes employs people to source items.

She hunts designer samples, attends end-of-line designer sales and also sells "on behalf" for people wanting to shed unwanted outfits.
Consultations for on behalf sales are by appointment, clothes must be in impeccable condition and profit is split 50-50. Sophie hears many stories from women who have maybe bought leather boots two sizes too small, or something similar.

"It makes business for me," she grins.

Sophie turns garments over fairly quickly, slashing prices if necessary to achieve a four- to five-week shelf life.

Things often happen "spontaneously". She acquired the two pairs of stunning Kathryn Wilson leather boots through a chance conversation with a customer. One pair has never been worn, the other worn once.

Both stores do lay-by and both women turn down chainstore labels.

Sophie says there's no point in stocking, say, a second-hand Glassons T-shirt when you could buy a new one for about $5 more.

Gaye has added little touches for Va Va Voom such as branded swing-labels and paper bags, classy shop fittings, some borrowed from her own home, and a beautifully appointed fitting-room.

As hospice volunteer staff Livvy Beech and Sara Lee greet customers on a Tuesday morning, Gaye muses that maybe they should have had two fitting-rooms.

Clair Finlay, from Puketaha, is browsing at Va Va Voom, likes what she sees, commends the mix of vintage and newer clothes, and adds, "the prices aren't out of reach".
Shirley Gurnell calls in with a basket of clothes; she's just had a clean-out of her wardrobe.
"There's a lovely winter coat in there," she says, and she wants the hospice to benefit.
Raglan textile artist Jean Carbon is a keen shopper at "pre-loved" designer label stores in Auckland, and now a customer at Frocking Gorgeous.

"I've bought a couple of lovely tops in good condition at competitive prices from Sophie," she says.
"I needed something to wear under a suit and I couldn't be bothered going into Hamilton.Clothing designer Erin Fetherston stood nearby wearing a green-and-black ensemble from her spring collection above a pair of christian louboutin platform pumps.
"Sophie's got a really, really good eye, and I want to support her."
Jean has just returned from overseas and she visited pre-loved quality clothing stores in Paris, Barcelona and London.
"I could have spent a fortune in the stores in London," she says.

She likes the retail concept and says you can mix and match bargains with items from regular shops.

"It's a very serious movement that is really building.

"It's about giving women the opportunity to mix up their fashion look, pulling different pieces together, creating their own look at different price points."

Jean says she was in one of her favourite Auckland pre-loved outlets recently with her daughter, who normally doesn't shop at such places.
"She had to suffer it. Then she found a classic little black dress for $100 and was an instant convert."

Hospice Waikato finance manager Rosemary Poole, who devised Va Va Voom's store strategy, owns the Shop 9 designer label fashion store in St Andrews, Hamilton.

She is comfortable wearing both hats, seeing distinct markets for new and near-new clothes.

She says Va Va Voom offers people who invest in good-quality fashion the opportunity to see their discarded items priced fairly, and benefiting a good cause.

"They know they're going to get good value out of them, and it's not taking anything away from fashion retailers."

While not disclosing turnover figures, both Rosemary and Sophie say they're getting good feedback at the respective businesses.

Sophie's clients are a mix of locals and out-of-towners, and she had some high-earning days over the summer, when Raglan's population grows.Some high heels require women to sacrifice comfort for fashion.

The winter will be harder but she set up the business without incurring debt, and it's paying its way.

She sells some homewares, too, and plans to do more "upcycling", adding extra touches to garments such as new buttons, a distinctive flower, or a funky lining.

Sophie says she's had wonderful support from her mother, her sisters and her partner, and her family has had a long involvement in the clothing trade, which all helps.

At Va Va Voom, Rosemary Poole says they are very happy with the results so far, "and we haven't even advertised heavily".

Embattled women to inspire through sharing their stories

“One Gospel approached me with the idea of the show. I think it had to do with my show on radio called Sacred Space,” said media person- ality Thami Ngubeni of her new TV show, The Scarlett Lounge.

“The show will be about women and the issues they encounter. We talk about their pain, loss, success, all the things they can share in their personal experiences.”

One Gospel, a Christian channel on DStv, has numerous local shows hosted by different celebrities and The Scarlett Lounge was created to focus on Christian women.

“Look, essentially we will be speaking to women, but the show is not limited to them. We are inviting the men into out sacred space to help them understand us more.

“There are a lot of women who have had to overcome something and we love sharing those kind of stories. Taunts are the least of what Barron has overcome. He suffered seizures from a rare form of epilepsy starting at age 8. The seizures were not life-threatening, but by the time he was 13 they were so frequent that his swim coaches worried he could drown. He gave up the pool, and he and his family decided on brain surgery.

Barron had two surgeries at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh in August 2006. First neurosurgeons located offending brain matter; later they removed it from his left frontal lobe. His athletic career was saved — and he's been on a fast track since.

"My personal goal," and here he stops midthought, "I should be careful how I say this. My first goal is always to finish, of course. My second goal is not to get DQed. My third goal is a time goal. If there are good conditions and I feel good and I haven't had any injury issues, I'd like to shoot for 1:24."

That's a magic number. If Barron hits it, he will qualify for this summer's world championships in Daegu, South Korea. That also would give him an Olympic-eligible time, though he would still have to qualify at next year's U.S. Olympic trials.

"I was left home, and I wasn't very happy about that," Barron says. "And so the next year I tried every event."

To his surprise, he was a natural at racewalking's unnatural movement.

Bruce home-schooled Trevor for his last three semesters of high school so he could spend more time on travel — internationally for competition, domestically to be with his coach.

Seaman, who is based near San Diego, walked for the USA in the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Games. He often tells Trevor how thrilling it is to march in communion with the world's great athletes on the night the Olympic flame is lit.

"The opening ceremonies are not my reason for training for the Olympics," Barron says. "And while I will try my best, neither is an Olympic medal. Instead, it's the international friends and experience that motivate me."

Seaman says don't be fooled by such talk: Few athletes train harder. Barron's times are not on pace for an Olympic medal — the USA has none since the bronzes won by Larry Young at 50,000 meters in 1968 and 1972 — but Seaman says he thinks Barron could surprise if his times keep improving.

At the Jesse Owens dinner, Barron cited Owens' words: "What is a gold medal? It is a trinket, a bauble. What counts, my friends, are the realities of life: The fact of competition and, yes, the great and good friends you make."

When Barron quit racewalking for those six months, the thing that brought him back, he says, was the chance to travel and make new friends.

Coach Friedman to retire after 25 years

After 25 years as a coach at Hunter-Tannersville Central, Jeff Friedman has decided to retire from coaching, leaving his mark on multiple sports.

I've been fortunate to have extremely supportive athletic directors, boards of education and administrators over the years — it's great to have that stability and support. Brent Deering, HTC's athletic director for the past seven years, said Friedman's shoes will be tough to fill.

“He's been a great leader,” Deering said. “He's had some real good teams and he's a had a very good, solid career.

“He's been a great asset to our coaching staff,” Deering continued. “He'll be hard to replace — it's hard to replace experience like that.”

Friedman said he has enjoyed working for five athletic directors and five superintendents over his tenure.

“The person who really influenced me is Randy Mudge,” he said of the first AD he worked under. “He's the guy who initially brought me in. He was a really good mentor and teacher to me and made me a better coach.”

Friedman said the most valuable lesson he's learned over years of coaching is the importance of preparation.

“I guess it really helped me to be an intense planner — to make sure that I was prepared every day for what needed to be done in order to give the student-athletes the best chance to learn and be successful.”

And while his business has currently become the focus for Friedman, he's not entirely closed off to the idea of coaching in the future.

“I wouldn't say I'm done forever,” he said. “I've been doing it my whole life.”
