A third-grader walked into Carol Wilson's office at Beachland Elementary to share a story with the longtime principal. It was clear and well-written, which isn't unusual for most students at the school.

Wilson, 64, said stories like his have been the highlight of her educational career, which ends June 30 when she retires.
"The story he wrote was written in perfect English and told of his hard work and pride in learning to speak a second language," Wilson said. Faculty members and students honored the educator's accomplishments this week. May 29 was "Carol Wilson Day" at Beachland, the school where she ended her 28-year career with the Indian River County School District.
Wilson began as a teacher at Citrus Elementary, served as the elementary specialist at Glendale Elementary and became principal of Fellsmere Elementary before landing her "dream job" as principal of Beachland.
Beachland has been an A-ranked school for 13 consecutive years, making it one of 26 elementary schools in the state to earn this distinction. "She's been an outstanding educator at every level she's been in. I'm going to miss her great sense of humor and her poetry. Anytime we needed someone to write something, we would call on Carol Wilson," said Fran Adams, who worked with Wilson in administration before becoming superintendent.
"When you're the person that's leading, the legacy you form is the people you bring in," Adams added. "She's a great communicator. She's always been very good at reaching out and getting support."
But Wilson didn't initially plan to work in education.
"When I was a teenager, my father always said, 'Get a college degree so you can have something to fall back on if something happens to your husband.' So, I majored in education," Wilson wrote in her resignation letter. "Honestly, I never thought I would even work outside of the home, and look at me! "I knew that I had found my 'calling,' " Wilson said. "There, I learned that being a leader was so very personally fulfilling even with the accompanying challenges. During those years, I recognized that becoming a principal would be the realization of being able to combine my love of children and their educational needs with my desire to be an administrator."
