For one thing, while he lives in Manhattan most of the year, he spends his summers in his native Idaho, fishing, camping and canoeing with his sons. Other designers search for inspiration in chic places like St. Tropez; Comstock journeys to remote locales like Mongolia or New Guinea.

His typical customer is a guy in his 30s, but they can be in their 70s if they're fit and have a young attitude, Comstock says. "He likes fashion, but it isn't his main thing. It's like his car; he wants something that looks good and performs."
Comstock doesn't believe in superfluous details and is "allergic to logos," which also suits his customers.
But above all, comfort is important. Comstock said the itchy wool garments that he wore as a kid propel him to use only feel-good materials in his line. He chooses all the fabrics and colors himself and says the collection begins each season when he visits the mills and tanneries. "Then I come back with materials that inspire me," he said, adding that there are typically 80 designs per collection. Prices range from about $40 for T-shirts to $600 for leather outerwear.

Clothing and bags in the line are printed with images of birds created by wildlife photographers, and a portion of the proceeds of sales are donated to the Peregrine Fund.
